As Refika Café & Restaurant, we continue to preserve this unique story and share its elegance with our guests.
In Adatepe Village, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, there lived a Greek beauty known as "Refika." Loved by the village, Refika was remembered not only for her beauty but also for her joy and grace. Her songs echoing at weddings and her dazzling dances turned her name into a legendary tale in the surrounding villages. During the olive harvest seasons, Refika’s melodic voice brought peace to the working villagers. Special Turkish songs were sung for her at the weddings, and dances were held in her honor. However, the shadow of World War I also affected the peaceful Adatepe. The post-war population exchange agreement led to Refika’s and the other Greeks' departure from the village.
Refika's departure from the village left a deep sorrow in the history of Adatepe. Her name blended into folk songs, passed down from generation to generation. The stories told by the village’s elders, like Abdi Amca, carried Refika’s tale to us. Later, the founders of the Adatepe Olive Oil Museum traced Refika’s footsteps to the island of Chios, Greece. A painting they brought back reminded the villagers of Refika. The portrait, which they confirmed with tears, saying, "Yes, this is her!" revived the legend of Refika.
